Amsterdam Resistance Museum: the Second World War as told by ordinary people
The Resistance Museum on Plantage Kerklaan in Amsterdam brings the Second World War to life in a way that really touches you. Not through dry facts, but through more than 130 personal stories of ordinary Dutch people who faced life-changing choices: to go along with it, to look the other way, or to resist. It makes history tangible and human.
The permanent exhibition explores daily life in occupied Netherlands from 1940 to 1945: from collaboration and the persecution of Jews to active resistance. Alongside Dutch wartime history, there is also an exhibition on the former Dutch colonies and the struggle for independence. The temporary exhibition ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ highlights the Iranian women’s resistance movement and places it within a broader historical context.
Especially for children, there is the Resistance Museum Junior, where visitors travel back to wartime in a time machine and experience the lives of four children. An audio guide in several languages is included with every ticket. The museum is easily accessible by public transport and also via the Cultuur Ferry. An impressive and rewarding visit for young and old alike.
