Rijksmuseum Amsterdam: the Dutch Golden Age at its very best The Rijksmuseum on Museumplein is quite simply one of the most beautiful and impressive museums in the world. Housed in this monumental building is the largest collection of Dutch art and history, with Rembrandt’s *The Night Watch* and Vermeer’s *The Milkmaid* as the absolute highlights. These are works you may recognise from reproductions, but which have a completely different impact when seen in the flesh. The collection comprises more than 840,000 objects, a selection of which – including paintings, sculptures, everyday objects and historical artefacts – is on permanent display. In addition to the permanent collection, there are regular major temporary exhibitions; currently, the ‘Metamorphoses’ exhibition is on display, featuring works by artists including Caravaggio, Bernini and Louise Bourgeois. The museum also has an extensive programme for families and children, and admission is free for visitors under 18. The Rijksmuseum is open daily from 9.00 to 17.00. Booking tickets online in advance is strongly recommended, as the museum is one of the most popular attractions in the Netherlands.
