The Rembrandt House Museum: the only place in the world where Rembrandt truly felt at home
On Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam stands the house where Rembrandt van Rijn lived, worked and painted his greatest masterpieces for no fewer than 19 years. The Rembrandt House Museum is the only place in the world where you can truly experience how the master once lived – not through a distant exhibition, but by literally walking through his rooms.
The house is furnished as it was in the 17th century, complete with the painting studios, the art cabinets, the study and the living quarters. You’ll discover the man behind the famous paintings and learn how he worked, what materials he used and what influences shaped his art. There are regular live etching and painting demonstrations where you can see how Rembrandt’s techniques worked in practice. Children can set off with Kwast, Rembrandt’s little dog, on a special multimedia tour of the house.
The museum is open daily from 10:00 and hosts changing exhibitions. A unique and impressive outing for anyone who really wants to understand Amsterdam and its Golden Age, and great fun for families with children too.
