ARTIS-Micropia: the invisible world made visible Micropia is unique in the world: it is the first and only museum entirely dedicated to micro-organisms. In this extraordinary museum, situated on the grounds of ARTIS on Plantage Kerklaan, you’ll discover a world that’s always around you but which you normally never see – the world of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microbes. Through microscopes and interactive displays, these invisibly tiny creatures are literally magnified before your eyes. You’ll learn how they make cheese, break down plastic, cause disease and sustain life. Every day, there are set times when a lab technician talks about the museum’s inhabitants, and there is always a ‘Microbe of the Month’ to discover. Children can collect stamps featuring different microbes during their visit. Micropia is accessible with a museum card and free for children up to and including the age of 12. The museum is also popular for school visits, with a special educational programme for all levels. A surprisingly fascinating place for curious minds of all ages and an excellent place to combine with a visit to ARTIS Park or the Grote Museum next door.
