Jewish Cultural Quarter: four centuries of history within a single square kilometre In Amsterdam’s old Jewish quarter, four remarkable buildings are situated within less than one square kilometre of one another: the Jewish Museum, the Jewish Museum Junior, the Portuguese Synagogue, the National Holocaust Museum and the Hollandsche Schouwburg. Together, they form the Jewish Cultural Quarter, a unique place to discover what it means to be Jewish, from centuries-old traditions to the horrors of the Second World War. At the Jewish Museum, you can delve into the rich history of Jewish culture and religion. The Portuguese Synagogue, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved synagogues in the world, takes you back to the 17th century. The National Holocaust Museum and the Hollandsche Schouwburg are impressive memorial sites that poignantly depict the persecution of the Jews. Free audio tours are available in several languages at all locations, and guided tours take place daily. The Jewish Museum Junior is specially designed for children aged 6 and over. The Holocaust Museum and the Schouwburg are not recommended for children under 10. All venues are wheelchair accessible and open almost every day from 10:00 to 17:00.
