About this activity
This summer, in collaboration with the Film Crew Club we are excited to offer a 5-day Filmmaking & Media Camp where kids and teens dive into the world of storytelling, film, and digital media. Throughout the week, campers explore what it’s like to be part of a real film crew, both in front of and behind the camera.
Using HD cameras, iPads, and smartphones, students create their own short films, experimenting with live action, animation (2D & 3D), and social media content. Campers rotate through different roles such as actor, director, scriptwriter, camera operator, animator, and editor, gaining hands-on experience with filming, editing in iMovie, and creating simple special effects.
Students learn:
- to think critically about images and videos
- to understand how editing tools shape what we see and manipulate how we feel
- to beware that the boundaries between creator content and sponsored content are increasingly blurred
- to assess online content for safety and risk
- to consider the feelings of those being filmed when creating content
By making media together, students gain a deeper understanding of how digital content is created and how to engage with it safely, respectfully, and responsibly.
At the end of the 5 days, campers walk away with multiple short films, new creative confidence, and a strong foundation in filmmaking, collaboration, and critical thinking.
