Industrial Red: cycling past the forgotten industrial sites between Amsterdam and Zaandam
This 32-kilometre cycle route connects Amsterdam and the Zaan region through an impressive industrial landscape that most people never get to see. From the iconic Westergasfabriek to the forgotten arms factory on the North Sea Canal, Industrial Red reveals the region’s rougher, more fascinating side.
The route takes you past Amsterdam’s architectural gems, the western port area with its historic port and industrial buildings, the unique Hembrug site and the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam-Noord. You’ll cycle along old sea dykes and past the Coen Tunnel; the fast cycle route between Amsterdam and Zaandam brings the two cities surprisingly close together, just 15 kilometres apart.
You can start at Amsterdam Central Station, Amsterdam Sloterdijk or Zaandam Station, and the route is also ideal for cycling in the opposite direction. You can follow the map on your mobile via the website. Would you like to take in the green Zaanstreek countryside as well? Then the route combines well with the adjacent green cycle route HRF27. A great choice for anyone who loves industrial heritage and urban cycling.
