Eye Film Museum for children: experiencing film both on and off the screen The iconic Eye Film Museum on the IJ in Amsterdam-Noord isn’t just for film lovers — it has a whole programme specially designed for children, and it’s surprisingly varied. From free activities and discovery trails to children’s films and creative workshops: there’s something for every age group. At Filmmagie, children watch short animations from the Eye’s extensive collection and then draw their own flipbook, learning how still images come to life. For the very youngest, there’s Cinemini: every Sunday morning, Eye’s most intimate cinema screen opens its doors to children aged 2 to 6 and their parents or grandparents, with a film followed by playing with light and shadow in little play tents. There are also animation stations on the stairs leading to Cinema 1, where children can use their own phones and a free app to make their own stop-motion film. And in the permanent exhibition ‘What is Film?’, visitors discover how film has developed from its early days to the present. Children’s films are shown on four screens: every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and daily during the school holidays. A creative and affordable day out for the whole family, right on the banks of the IJ with a stunning view of Amsterdam Central Station.
